At the ballpark, the Caracas faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's
duel. Brandon Backe(2-1) finally bested his Chicago counterpart, Tanyon
Sturtze(0-2), by the score of 3 to 0.
Chicago was unable to recover after Caracas went ahead in the 2nd inning
plating an isolated run on 2 hits. Bill Mueller blasted a solo shot (his 9th
of the season). The early run support proved sufficient for Backe and
Caracas. That was all the run support Backe required. Chicago was set down
quietly in the 9th.
Scot Shields recorded the save, his 17th. Sturtze was hit with the loss. He
pitched 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 hits and 1 walk.
